Palm defines “meta-taps”

February 11th, 2010 admin No comments

So you know those taps on your Pre and Pixi? Yeah the ones such as holding your finger on the gesture area while you press the C, V to copy, paste etc? Well Palm has a name for them, they are called “meta-taps” and the company is likening it to Command click on ac or Ctrl, Alt, Del on Windows systems.

We’re not so much interested in it’s name as it’s function, and at the moment, meta-taps is damn awesome. Now there is something that can be said for reinventing the wheel.

Video recording and Flash 10.1 support coming to webOS in Fabruary

January 8th, 2010 admin No comments

Guess what folks, the previously announced support of Flash 10.1 on the webOS platform is materializing. Coming February in the form of webOS 1.4, true Flash 10.1 support will be flooding the App Catalog in the form of a beta plugin.

Palm went on to say that the inclusion of video recording on the Pre and Pixi will become official thanks to webOS 1.4 which will also be hitting the Pre and Pixi in February. You will also be able to edit videos directly on the device and upload them to YouTube, MMS, email and of course download them to your computer.

All these goodies will be arriving next month so stay tuned.

BillShrink.com pits Pre vs. iPhone, Nexus One and Droid

January 7th, 2010 admin No comments

The graphic is pretty self explanatory so we’ll be brief in our explanation. But we would just like to point out two things. First of all BillShrink fails to mention Sprint’s “Everything Mobile” plan which is an industry first and a lot better then any of the offerings from T-Mobile. Secondly, they fail to mention that T-Mobile still has the least 3G coverage. Other then that, the graphic is pretty accurate. Check it out.

TatSkinz Design Contest

October 16th, 2009 admin No comments

TatSkinz_Design_Contest_LogoCreativity is a wonderful thing, and for those who have a creative mind we have something you might be interested in. TatSkinz, the maker of protective body art for the Palm Pre as well as other devices, is holding a contest where they’re asking participants to come up with a unique creative and fresh design and the opportunity to receive a $1,000 school scholarship or Mac computer. More importantly your design could be chosen for the entire world to see (meaning it could be turned into the next TatSkinz). Check out the full press release below.

WIN APPLE COMPUTER OR $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP THROUGH TATSKINZ DESIGN CONTEST

Winning Entry Will Be Produced for Sale, Submit Through November

DRAPER, UT – (October, 2009) – NLU Products, maker of TatSkinz protective body art for electronic devices, will hold its first-ever iPod cover design contest throughout October, providing artists and technology aficionados the opportunity to turn their personal artwork into the next TatSkinz. One winning creative genius will see his or her “tat” incorporated into the TatSkinz line-up and win either a $1000 scholarship or 13” MacBook. In addition to popular vote from online visitors to the site, several prominent technology and design reviewers will serve as guest judges for the contest, ultimately deciding on the winning design.

TatSkinz offers complete scratch and scuff protection for several Apple devices, while adding personality in a range of colorful designs, giving custom-cut attitude to each gadget. Incorporating a special, repositionable adhesive, TatSkinz uses an air-release technology that prevents bubbles from forming below the film. The skin can be applied directly to the device, or ideally, on top of NLU Products’ BodyGuardz scratch-proof transparent skin for maximum protection.

“This is a unique opportunity to turn someone’s imaginative work into the next TatSkinz design and at the same time support creativity and the arts,” said Kirk Feller, president of NLU Products. “We always want to hear our customers’ feedback and this will offer them the chance to show us exactly what designs they want to see.”

Contest participants should submit designs at TatSkinz.com/contest beginning October 1; submissions will be accepted through the entire month of November. Voters can go to this site and pick their favorite entry, and NLU Products will use the popular vote to determine the front-runners for the judges’ consideration; the judges panel includes:

  • John Biggs serves as a technology writer at CrunchGear.com and regular contributor to The New York Times. He reviews the latest technology gadgets and has also contributed to Laptop, Men’s Health, Linux Journal, Popular Science and other national magazines.
    • Ryan Smith is a freelance writer/journalist in Chicago who covers technology, video games and sports for the Chicago Tribune’s RedEye. A Land of Lincoln (Springfield, IL) native, Ryan won several local and state journalism awards in his six years as a news reporter in Missouri and Los Angeles.
    • Eliane Fiolet is co-founder of Ubergizmo.com where she writes about web applications, design and usability. She owns a Corporate ID design business that helps companies create great brands. Prior to opening her own agency, Eliane worked for a top design firm, Minale Tattersfield Design Strategy, where she created identities for Fortune 500 companies.
    • Doug Aamoth is a freelance web developer and tech enthusiast. A self-proclaimed mediocre comedic actor, Doug reviews gadgets at CrunchGear.com, while making videos and hosting the weekly live podcast for those who don’t like to read.
  • Long Tran is the Creative Director of Yankodesign.com and is responsible for all editorial aspects of the renowned industrial design blog. He currently art directs for an interactive design agency with clients such as Disney, Fox, NBC Universal, Pioneer and Nintendo. His background is in fashion design and is currently working on a debut menswear collection called Panda-Makings Making Pandas.
  • Thomas Wong was ridiculously bored of academic writing at university and finally found something he could actually write entire pages about (or ‘aboot” if you think Canadians sound like that): mobile tech! When he’s not gaming or reading about tech, Thomas can be found on JAMM.mobi and Just Another iPhone Blog writing about all the geeky things he loves.

Contest Rules and Regulations:

  • Original artwork only
  • Design no smaller than 5” X 5” (300 dpi)
  • Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or Photoshop (.psd) file only
  • Submitted in CMYK
  • No knock outs or white areas for device screens
  • One submission per entrant
  • Must be 18 or older

For more information or to enter the contest visit www.TatSkinz.com.
