Palm announces availability of Mojo SDK

Palm announces availability of Mojo SDK

When they said end of summer (Palm that is), we were expecting sometime in late August. But it seems that there has been a change of heart in the big guys up there at Palm. Yes people its, official, Palm has just released the beta version of its Mojo SDK to the hands of hungry developers. That said they also announced that they will begin taking submissions for the App Catalog sometime this fall. That gies you enough time to work on a Pre version of the iFart app.

As for those who you who did the Torrent thing a few weeks back, you can finally get the files and more so DOCUMENTATION legally from the links below. So hit up the comments and tell us what you’re planning on building.

Palm finally spills the beans on its Mojo SDK Limited Early Access Program

There has been a lot of bickering in the developer arena that Palm is taking its own sweet time in releasing an SDK for the Pre. That said, we should point out that Palm did not plan on releasing the App Catalog until after the Pre was released. However they decided to change their mind. Further more they did say that it would be a while before the SDK was available and we should wait. Wait we have been doing but some are getting the jitters and so Palm’s own Chuq Von Rospach (Developer Community Manager) decided to set the record straight as to who what and when regarding that early access to the Mojo SDK.

The primary limitation we have today is the capacity of our developer area, which wasn’t built to support the number of developers who want access. That’s actually a good problem to have, and we have a team working on bulking up the infrastructure, too. There are some really interesting things just over the horizon here, but it takes time.

If you think about it, if we let too many people in too fast and everything does the fail whale, we’ll get yelled at and developers will give up on us. I realize that there are some developers who are tired of waiting — and I fully understand — but I hope they’ll come and take another look at us later when we finish the SDK up and get it out to everyone. If we mess up the SDK or the tools, we risk driving away lots of developers and convincing them not to come back. It’s a fun and challenging balancing act.

Our current admission policy is fairly simple: we’re accepting in applications based on how complete and detailed the applications were. I’ve broken that up into a few different piles of applications, and within each pile, we’re admitting them based on when they sent us the application. Right now, the most detailed applications are going in; when we finish that, we’ll grab the next set and do the same until everyone is in the program or we release the SDK to the public and end the early access program.

Satisfied now? Yes we know you’re itching to put your HTML and JavaScript knowledge to use but wait a bit will ya. All good things will come in due time.

Spaz webOS app

Spaz webOS app

We always knew that webOS would require HTML, Javascript and maybe a little more knowledge to develop apps for. But what is it really like developing an app for the webOS platform? Well until recently we could only imagine. That is until the webOS Mojo SDK beta was leaked a few days ago.

But if you’re still interested in hearing first hand from a developer what its like then check out the read link below for the full interview of app developer Ed Finkler, yeah the same guy behind the awesome Spaz app. Its not everyday someone decides to talk (who knows what their saying), so I would advice you listen.

mojo-sdk-screen-shot

This is not a surprise as we were expecting this any day now. Basically what this means is you can download the Mojo SDK from any of the links below. As we have always said before, we cannot gaurantee that this will work for you and by downloading the files at the links provided (after the break) you do accept all responsibility for any damage it may cause to your machine.

It should be pointed out that just because you build an app with this Mojo SDK doesn’t mean you will get it on the App Catalog. But you can always develop now, and wait until later to join the devoper team and upload your app, thus giving yourself and early start at the development processes. You can always do the home brew stuff though.

Anyways, the links to download can be found after the break. As we said before, download at your own risk.

Palm: no webOS SDK till summer end 2009

This is a little dissapointing. Seems like Palm doesn’t have any plans to release an SDK for webOS until the end of this summer. According to Palm:

With the Pre now in customers’ hands and reports of webOS hacks in the news, we know that you are more anxious than ever to get access to the SDK and start developing for webOS.

We’ve been working very hard on the SDK and are eager to open access on a wider scale, but the software and the developer services to support it just aren’t ready yet.

But don’t get too disheartened as Palm is expanding the listof those who can get their hands on the Mojo SDK early as we speak. So with a little luck on your hand you might just be able to land the Mojo SDK a little early.

According to Palm the reason for them delaying the launch of the Mojo SDK is because they are working out the details about the API and right now the SDK that they have op and running is still crude. So we’ll just have to wait and see.

Palm webOS Mojo SDK tutorial released

February 27th, 2009 admin 1 comment

mojo-sdk-tutorialWell what would you know, those awesome things we heard about the webOS Mojo SDK were actually true. Turns out that the requirements for making an app for the webOS platform.

Palm Software CTO, Mitch Allen, did a little rundown of the processes one goes about to create an app, and was able to pull it off with just Safari and TextMate. For those who are not inclined to JavaScript, HTML or the likes, there isn’t much here, but if you’re like me who has a little programming experience under your belt it shouldn’t be that hard.

More importantly is the fact that Mojo SDK uses mainly web languages to program so web developers shouldn’t have the nightmare of programming they had when they developed for the iPhone or Android.

If you want more details, fail not to view the video below.

Palm webOS Mojo SDK screenshots leaked

January 13th, 2009 admin No comments

Other than the fact that the just announced Palm Pre is powered by their new webOS™, Palm has also been keeping pretty busy on the developers end, and thanks to a developer who has worked closely with the company we now have some screenshots of the SDK that is looking very promising. The info was leaked by the unnamed developer to BGR who also noted that the Mojo SDK will allow developers greater ease with app programming and publication.

The photos in the gallery below have been floating around for a while but you’re welcome to take a look. The apps will be available via over the air download from Palm’s version of the iTunes app store dubbed App Catalog. So far Palm has said that it will be ditching the desktop side of the App Catalog and in turn opt for a device only version.
